Dev Log #4 - Final Build
It's finally here, the complete build of One Shelf at a Time! I am really proud of all the progress I made in the development of this game, and it's been a blast seeing everything come together. I improved on many aspects of the game between this and the beta build, so let's get into it!
Most importantly to me, I refined the scenery of the library. I really wanted to make the library feel like it was alive. There are lots unique furniture and decorative pieces all around the stacks that I believe liven the atmosphere. I also tried to prevent there being too many empty dead spaces because I didn't want the player to be walking around an area with nothing to see. The book textures have been desaturated so that they look more natural with the rest of the environment. There are now maps on both floors to help the player identify where each genre of shelves are located. Lastly, the patron sprites have color now!
My last playtests provided me with a bunch of helpful feedback that guided me in polishing my gameplay. Some players struggled with the movement controls changing when entering and leaving shelving mode. Originally, when entering shelving mode the A and D keys would change to forward/backward movement and W and S would become left/right movement. I have now made it so that the controls stay the same in and out of shelving mode (A and D is left/right, W and S is forward/backward) which should make the transition smoother. There is also a new pause screen that the player can access by pressing Escape where the player can see the controls and return to the main menu, restart the game, or quit the game. The Staff Room billboard has also been rewritten to clarify the player's objective and goals.
The complete gameplay video is attached to this dev log, and the trailer and final build are posted on the main page. Have fun with One Shelf at a Time!
